Stainless Steel Meter Boxes and Distribution Boxes: What Is the Difference?

Meter boxes

Meter boxes can be manufactured by bending and welding cold-rolled steel sheet or stainless steel sheet. Knockouts at the top and bottom provide cable-entry options and are supplied closed. Earth and neutral terminals help organise wiring, while an internal mounting plate supports electrical equipment. The door should move freely and open beyond 90 degrees.

A compact, well-planned layout supports practical installation and operation. Depending on the selected design, the enclosure may incorporate features for dust, moisture and corrosion protection, flame resistance, temperature resistance and impact resistance. Requirements such as explosion protection must be assessed for the specific design and application.

The surface can receive anti-rust treatment and an electrostatic powder coating, with colours selected to suit the customer. Dimensions and internal wiring arrangements can be customised.

Stainless steel distribution boxes

Stainless steel distribution boxes are used in outdoor distribution systems and in environments where corrosion resistance is important. Suitability for strongly acidic or alkaline conditions depends on the material and the actual operating environment.

Common material options include 201, 304 and 316 stainless steel, with argon-arc welding used in fabrication. Configurations include indoor wall-mounted boxes, outdoor waterproof wall-mounted boxes and outdoor waterproof floor-standing boxes. The original article describes designs with protection ratings up to IP65; the required rating must be confirmed for the supplied enclosure.

Custom electrical functions

Dimensions and layouts can be manufactured to customer requirements. Depending on the equipment fitted, these enclosures can serve as air-conditioning control boxes, water-pump control boxes, street-light control boxes, outdoor waterproof boxes, fan control boxes, fire-system control boxes, dual-power transfer boxes, temporary construction-site distribution boxes or isolator switch boxes.
